Modern Country Garden

Set in a Chiltern valley, flanked by paddocks and woodland this garden needed to settle a beautiful extended building, designed by Heighway Associate Architects into its surrounding landscape. 

The brief was for a garden for the whole family and their friends, chickens, horses and dogs.  A productive garden that would entertain the children when they returned for holidays and that would embrace the merriment and chaos that wider family life brings.  Entertaining and cooking for a crowd lay at the heart of this household, yet the garden needed to allow for stolen moments of calm and escape.

The location of the garden presented a serious challenge: set deep in a valley, the garden is exposed to unusual micro-climates with cold air dropping into the valley and winds that swoop the cold air deeper into the garden.  Mindful of this we set about designing to drop frost pockets away from key plantings and to plant to fit the climates.
